Searching for a new piano tuner can be stressful!

"About ten years ago, 'my piano tuner' shocked me with the news of his retirement. I had to find a new technician – comparable to finding a new family physician – they are rare and have to know what they are doing! Fortunately, I followed through on a recommendation to try Mark Calkhoven who has capably and efficiently taken great care of my lovely Yamaha grand ever since. The same care and attention has been appreciated by my granddaughter as she prepares for her grade ten piano examination. Mark has also regulated both of our instruments with “singing” results. "I've lost track of how many years Mark has tuned my piano. Over 15 years, I think. My whole family calls on Mark to tune their pianos. No complaints, whatsoever. He'll drive anywhere in the city as well as the surrounding area (e.g., Okotoks, High River, Strathmore).

A few years ago, Mark added piano repairs and refurbishing to his services. He came over quickly when I busted one of my strings when practicing a tricky part a little too viciously. Seriously though, he can handle a complete piano refurbishing, not just broken strings.

If you need a height-adjustable piano footstool, Mark's your man. Well-crafted and much more affordable than what you'd get at some music retailers.

If you're looking to buy a used piano, you can call Mark to inspect it (you know, like getting a mechanic to look over a used car).

"Completely thrilled with his attention to detail and thoroughness. Mark clearly takes pride in doing an amazing job and in two visits has resurrected my piano from a giant paperweight to an instrument that sounds good and is again fun to play!

Mark came out the first time 2 weeks ago and spent around 3h painstakingly fixing keys and restoring my badly out of tune piano. It sounded great when I got home, but Mark had warned that the dry climate in Alberta may still surface other problems. Sure enough within 5h of playing, I lost a couple of keys again. Upon contacting Mark he suggested to give it a week and then he would come back out and take a look.

Today was his 2nd visit. He was here 40 min on his own time, fixed the 2 keys and even fixed my sustain pedal as well... 😁

I could not believe how big of a difference the piano sounded.

"I don't normally review stuff, and I actually created a yelp account because of how amazingly well my piano sounds after Mark tuned it.

We shipped my wife piano from Ontario. I don't think that thing has been tuned in ages. I looked for a couple reviews for piano tuners (not that many reviews for people in our city). So I just decided I'll give Mark Calkhoven a try, and gave him a call. He told me right off the bat, if it has been shipped, give the piano three weeks to just sit, so the wood and strings get use to the new environment.

Three week later Mark came over prompt and professional. I sat in the other room and could hear him go through each key one by one. At the end of it he started playing a tune, and I was that actually sounds pretty good. He then proceeded to walk me through my piano, explaining to me about the age, condition and effect of humidity on pianos. I was half expecting him to next say he would need to come back because it was so out of tune, but nope he was like ‘It was out of tune, but is in great condition. You may want to get it tuned a year from now, and then a year later, and then if you don't move again, you probably won't need to be tuned ever again.’ So I was happy.

It wasn't until later today that I tried the piano. Playing some songs I was trying to learn last week. And then my mouth dropped, I could not believe how big of a difference the piano sounded. It was a simple song 'Silent Night', but wow it just sounded beautiful now. So I stopped everything and was like I need to write a review. I created a Yelp account just so I could write a review about Mark Calkhoven. I'm sure there are many other great tuners around Calgary, but I was truly impressed at the sound of my piano after Mark tuned it."
